Morning arrives too soon and I don’t need to open my eyes to see it. But the world feels still. Too still. My eyes open wide and the first thing I see is…nothing. It makes me smile because Sage’s thick brown hair is obstructing my view and the memory of her, of us, brings last night back in vivid clarity.
Sage Kingston. Just thinking her name put a smile on my face. Never in my wildest dreams could I imagine us naked together. Climbing to the heights of passion and beyond.
All. Night. Long.
Slowly I pull the locks of her hair from my face and turn to the windows outside. It’s still snowing, but the flakes are fat and soft, swinging, I imagine, gently to the concrete below. A quick look at Sage confirms she’s still sleeping peacefully and I extricate myself from the warm cocoon we created last night, made up of emergency blankets, coats for pillows along with the ones from the sofa too. I get to my feet and scan the room for my boxer briefs before casting a quick look to the hallway beyond the windows to make sure we’re still alone.
Unchaperoned.
The snow slowed considerably overnight and even though it’s still coming down, plows and cabs are dotting the streets below. The bank clock on the corner shows it’s barely six o’clock which means Sage and I won’t be alone for much longer. I cast a glance her way, wondering if waking her prematurely is wise. Last night we’d gotten along so well, better than ever. But I know last night and this morning are two very different things.
I allow myself a few more moments of peace before waking Sage and dealing with…whatever may come. I soak in the morning's peace and the beauty that is Manhattan after a blizzard. The streets are mostly empty, quiet and still pristine from hours of falling snow. Christmastime in New York provides one of the most perfect views I’ve ever seen. Almost makes me wish I was staying around this year.
“Oh. My. God.” Sage’s voice cuts through the silence, the peace and I dig my heels into the carpet, readying for…whatever. “Oh my God,” she says again, this time louder.
“Good morning, Sage.”
“Good morning?” Her outrage is palpable and I bite down on the inside of my jaw to keep from saying something I’ll regret, or worse, something I might not. “That’s what you have to say after…everything?”
“What the hell should I say? Would you like me to thank you for a great fuck?”
She growls and struggles, scrambling with the all the fabrics covering her body until she’s on her feet with her hands on her hips, big blue eyes glaring at me like I’ve done something to her. Sage casts a long look at her naked body and then mine, clad only in boxers, and growls again. “I can’t believe this.”
“Can we please put a lid on the morning after outrage? You were a willing participant last night. Every. Damn. Time.” The look of outrage on her face fills me with twisted satisfaction.
